From Iceland — Iceberg On Its Way To Bolungarvík

Iceberg On Its Way To Bolungarvík

Published September 29, 2011

Quite a few icebergs have been spotted floating around in the Westfjords, and one is apparently heading fro Bolungarvík.
Icebergs, while not an unusual site off the northern coasts of Iceland, have been increasing in recent years. Ísafjörður newspaper Bæjarins Bestu now reports – with some great photos to boot – that a chunk of a much larger iceberg further out to sea should be visible from Bolungarvík tomorrow.
Captain Sigurður Hjartarson took a photographer with him to get a closer look at the iceberg, which is now about nine nautical miles from shore. Sigurður said the chunk has been a threat to other boats in the area, and warned not to get too close to the iceberg, saying that he watched a large piece of it break off when he and a friend went to get a closer look.
That particular chunk of iceberg should be visible from Bolungarvík today. Another iceberg has been spotted about six nautical miles from shore, in Dýrafjörður.
Should you be out boating and spot a nearby iceberg, by all means take photos but avoid approaching it – icebergs can break apart without warning, meaning larger ones can cause serious injuries to those on deck, not to mention the fact that most of an iceberg is under the surface, making their true shape hard to tell.
