A spokesperson for International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in Iceland has responded to recent remarks from an Icelandic MP that anti-whaling pressure constitutes “terrorism”.

Sigursteinn Másson, Vísir reports, has tried to set the record straight on the nature of terrorism where whale hunting is considered.

“If people want to talk about terrorism in this context, then it’s completely obvious that whale hunting is harming Icelandic interests,” Sigursteinn said, adding that the response from the Icelandic government to increasing anti-whaling pressure have been “fanatical”.

As reported, the food company HighLiner Foods has decided to stop buying seafood from the Icelandic company HB Grandi – for which the director of the board is Kristján Loftsson, who is also the director of whaling company Hvalur hf.

Independence Party MP Jón Gunnarsson was frank with reporters on the matter, saying, “We have seen these threats from so-called peace groups, or nature conservation groups, as they like to call themselves. … This is of course nothing other than a form of terrorism.”
