From Iceland — Hollywood Takes Over Kirkjubærjarklaustur

Hollywood Takes Over Kirkjubærjarklaustur

Published September 10, 2013

A small Icelandic village has been overrun by a Hollywood crew for the filming of Christopher Nolan’s latest film.
Kirkjubærjarklaustur, also known as Klaustur to the locals, is a normally sleepy village in southeast Iceland of about 120 people. RÚV reports that the population has now grown dramatically – albeit temporarily – as filming for Interstellar, a new film by Christoper Nolan, is underway.
There has been a great deal of secrecy surrounding the filming, but this hasn’t stopped residents from chipping in with the construction of sets and other handiwork. By all accounts the entire village is, in one form or another, involved in the production.
Every hotel and guesthouse in Klaustur is booked solid, as are many vacation homes nearby. Some of the residents have even lent out rooms in their private homes to the film crew. Among the village’s new residents are actors Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey
Things will return to normal at Klaustur soon, though. Shooting is only expected to last about two weeks.
