Icelandic health officials are currently meeting to discuss ways in which they can fight the spread of HIV, with some suggesting giving away hypodermic needles.
The council discussing the matter focuses primarily on stopping the spread of infectious diseases. One of the more alarming concerns has been the fact that 17 Icelanders have been diagnosed as HIV positive this year alone.
One of the ways to combat the spread, they have suggested, would be to increase access to free, clean hypodermic needles for drug addicts. The Red Cross already has such a programme in place, and health officials would like to see more funding and effort put into this project.
Another suggestion has been to lower the price of condoms. Earlier this summer, the government announced it would seek to lower the cost by possibly moving condoms down from their current tax bracket.
