From Iceland — Gylfi Magnusson To Be Minister of Business

Gylfi Magnusson To Be Minister of Business

Published January 30, 2009

Morgunblaðið reports that the Social Democrats and Left-Greens have
reached an agreement to hire Gylfi Magnússon, a professor of economics
at the University of Iceland, to be the next Minister of Business. He has accepted the offer.
Among the many big changes in store for the new government will be changing the management of the Central Bank, which would include current chairman Davíð Oddsson. As Minister of Business, Magnússon would be the director of the Financial Supervisory as well. According to an unnamed source at Morgunblaðið, possible replacements for Oddsson include Már Guðmundsson, the former primary economist at the Central Bank, while Björg Thorarensen, a legal professor at the University of Iceland, could be the next Minister of Justice.
