From Iceland — Growing Support For Finishing EU Negotiations

Growing Support For Finishing EU Negotiations

Published August 30, 2013

A new Gallup poll shows that not only do most Icelanders support finishing European Union accession talks – this support is also increasing.
As reported, EU talks were paused last spring by the previous government, in anticipated of elections in April. The new government that has since been voted in appears to be divided on the question of whether to continue talks or drop them altogether. Both parties in the ruling coalition – the Progressives and the Independence Party – are against Iceland joining the EU.
Vísir now reports that a new Gallup poll shows increasing support for finishing the talks.
The poll shows that 53% of respondents want Iceland to finish accession talks, while 35.1% want Iceland to walk away from the negotiations table. 11.3% said they were neutral on the issue.
The majority of Icelanders also favoured finishing talks when the last poll was taken, in June, when 49.6% said they wanted to finish talks while 41.1% wanted to end them.
If talks are finished, the matter will probably go to public referendum. Whether or not most Icelanders will vote Yes to accession is a whole other matter.
