From Iceland — Grimsey In State of Electrical Chaos

Grimsey In State of Electrical Chaos

Published May 19, 2009

Residents of the small island of Grímsey are living with power outages numbering upwards of 20 per day.
Mayor Garðar Ólason told RÚV that he’s received little by way of action or reassurance, save for being told that “they are waiting for parts to come in from overseas”. Ólason is naturally upset that the island’s residents are living in conditions which would warrant immediate action if it were to happen in Reykjavík.
Grímsey is home to about 100 people, most of whom live in the village of Sandvík. About 45km north of the Icelandic mainland, it lies on the Arctic Circle, connected to Iceland by ferry and plane. It was recently brought under the jurisdiction of the county of Eyjarfjarðarsýsla, where Akureyri holds the county seat.
No word yet on when Grímsey residents can expect to have stable electrical power.
