The Social Democrats and Leftist-Greens who currently comprise the ruling coalition would lose eight of their 34 seats if elections were held today.
According to a poll conducted by the radio station Bylgjan, if elections were held today, the Independence Party – who were driven from power among protests barely over a year ago – would be the largest, having 26 seats instead of the 16 they have now. The Progressives, who are also in the opposition, would gain two seats, going from nine to eleven. The Social Democrats, by contrast, would lose six seats, winning 14 instead of 20, while the Leftist-Greens would go from 14 to 12.
Despite the results, of a list of politicians, most – 30% – said they trusted Minister of Finance and Leftist-Green chairman Steingrímur J. Sigfússon the most. This was followed by Independence Party chairman Bjarni Benediktsson at 28%, Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir at 21%, and then Progressive chairman Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson at 20%.
