From Iceland — Government Support Increases

Government Support Increases

Published September 2, 2010

Both parties in the ruling coalition increase in support, but the conservatives remain the largest party in the country, according to a new poll from Gallup.
Since the previous poll, taken in July, the Social Democrats have seen a modest rise in support, from 24% to 25%. At the same time, the Leftist-Greens have risen in support from 19% to 21%.
However, the conservative Independence Party – driven from power just last year in the wake of the economic collapsed and prolonged public protest – remain the largest party in the country, with just under 35% support. The Progressives are also at a standstill from the previous poll, at 12%.
When compared to the level of support the parties had in the previous elections, the Social Democrats have seen the greatest drop in support, while the conservatives have seen the greatest rise.
8% of those polled said they support other parties, and 16% said they would submit blank votes if elections were held today.
