Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, the former vice chairperson of the Independence Party, pulled no punches in an interview this morning.
DV reports that Þorgerður was a guest on Sunnudagsmorgun (Sunday Morning), hosted by former Independence Party city councilperson Gísili Marteinn Baldursson. Amongst other topics discussed, they touched upon the recent EU talks referendum protests and the plummeting support for the ruling coalition.
On this subject, Þorgerður was quite blunt:
“People don’t let anyone bullshit them anymore. They don’t want anymore of this political obstinacy.”
Þorgerður told viewers she attributes the ruling coalition’s recent drop in support to the EU question.
“I think a part of this is the more liberal people are leaving the party,” she said, adding that she finds it awkward that the foreign policy of President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson has effectively become the policy of the Independence Party, and “All of the sudden we should only talk with China and talk with Russia.”
At the time of this writing, nearly 44,000 have signed a petition calling for the ruling coalition to put forward a public referendum on whether or not to continue EU talks – as the ruling coalition promised before elections last April.
