Foreign Minister to Address UN

Published September 21, 2009

Foreign Minister Össur Skarphéðinsson will address the 64th convening of the United Nations, which opens this Wednesday.
Apart from giving the main address, Skarphéðinsson will also chair a meeting between the Nordic and Baltic countries. Among other things, he will also seek a meeting on climate change. This will include participating in a roundtable discussion on how to increase productivity and efficiency around the world without increading global warming, and participate in a disarmament meeting on Thursday.
Iceland had originally planned on applying for the UN leaadership position, but have since put those plans on hold, as campaigning for the temporary seat can be an expensive affair.
