From Iceland — Fishermen Fired After Failed Drug Testing

Fishermen Fired After Failed Drug Testing

Published February 5, 2013

Eleven fishermen in the Westman Islands have been fired after failing mandatory drug testing over the weekend.
Director of Vinnslustöðvarinnar í Vestmannaeyjum, a Westman Islands-based trawling company, Sigurgeir Brynjar Kristgeirsson confirmed to DV.is that drug testing was undertaken and that the eleven fishermen in question were dismissed on the spot once traces of THC were found in their urine. The mass-dismissal has left one trawler with just half of a crew.
When asked whether considerations would be taken regarding how long THC remains detectable in ones system – the active drug in cannabis can be detected in ones urine for 2 weeks or up to 90-days, depending on frequency of usage – Sigurgeir noted that it would be impossible to accurately determine when employees were engaging in drug use and, therefore, no such considerations would be taken.
No further information about those found to have been engaging in drug use has been released.
Just say ‘no,’ people.
