From Iceland — Fewer Vacations = Less Skin Cancer

Fewer Vacations = Less Skin Cancer

Published February 23, 2009

The Icelandic Radiation Protection Institute has come to the conclusion
that as fewer Icelanders take vacations to sunny spots like Mallorca
and Benidorm, the incidences of skin cancer among Icelanders could decline.
They point to a survey conducted by The Public Health Institute of Iceland in 2007, which came to the perhaps not very surprising conclusion that Icelanders are more likely to sunburn overseas than in Iceland. Morgunblaðið reports that nearly a third of Icelanders over the age of 18 became sunburned when vacationing in sunny locations, and an additional 10% became sunburned elsewhere in the world. Icelanders aged 18-25 are also the most likely age group to go to tanning salons.
On average, each Icelander takes one and a half trips abroad each year. With the economic crisis, it has been projected that the number of trips overseas could reduce by as much as 40%.
