From Iceland — Feminist Society Praises Toys 'R' Us

Feminist Society Praises Toys ‘R’ Us

Published November 15, 2013

The Feminist Society of Iceland praised Toys ‘R’ Us for a new advertising leaflet that they say defies gender stereotypes.
Vísir reports that the leaflet features boys and girls playing with kitchen sets, dinosaurs, dolls and toy carpentry sets, without pairing the boys and girls with the toys that gender stereotypes would normally dictate for them.
The Feminist Society of Iceland praised the move, saying that they were pleased to see a company “make an effort to try and break gender stereotypes regarding children. It is very pleasing to see that these stereotypes are put aside and an emphasis is instead placed on that children can play with whatever toys they find the most fun, regardless of sex.”
In that spirit, the Feminist Society encourages parents and grandparents alike to bear in mind that, when shopping for toys for the kids in the family, to avoid imposing what toys boys and girls are “supposed” to play with.
“We hope that people let themselves think outside the box and give boys and girls alike toys that are meaningful and fun, regardless of whether the toy has been defined as a toy for girls or a toy for boys,” they said.
