From Iceland — Fears Banks Could Be Covering Their Tracks

Fears Banks Could Be Covering Their Tracks

Published January 19, 2010

Leftist-Green MP and chairman of the Business Committee Lilja Mósesdóttir believes Icelandic banks could be trying to cover up mistakes and wrong-doings they made before the economic collapse.
Speaking on the roundtable discussion television show Silfur Egils, Mósesdóttir said that she and her colleagues on the committee are worried that Icelandic banks are operating behind locked doors to cover their tracks. She said that she has urged Minister of Business Gylfi Magnússon that the supervisory committee – which is to be comprised of business experts, economists, and auditors – be put into commission at once.
The cause for her concern is partly based on the fact that many of the same people who were working in the banks before the collapse are still working there now. She also emphasized that the supervisory committee, agreed upon last October, was to be given the power to thoroughly investigate the investment offices of the nation’s banks, and that she was disappointed that the committee wasn’t made operational immediately.
