Feared Being Trapped in Iceland

Published April 27, 2010

Hundreds of tourists have cancelled hotel reservations in Iceland out of fear of being stranded in the country due to the Eyjafjallajökull volcano.
Vísir reports that hotel owners have seen hundreds of cancellations for April and May. The unpredictability of when flights are cancelled or allowed to in and out of the country has made many tourists uneasy about planning a trip here at this time. This, in turn, makes me hotel owners nervous themselves.
Kristján Daníelsson, the manager of Hotel Saga, told Vísir that they’ve seen a hundred cancellations alone for April and May. On the other hand, cancellations for the summer months have not increased significantly.
Daníelsson and others in the tourist industry in Iceland have been working with tourists and tourist agencies abroad in being able to clarify matters as best they can. Representatives of the tourist industry are also holding meetings with the Industry Committee, working out a PR strategy for dealing with the eruptions.
