From Iceland — Eva Joly Believes Iceland Should Join the EU

Eva Joly Believes Iceland Should Join the EU

Published October 19, 2010

Resigning assistant to the special prosecutor Eva Joly believes that joining the European Union would be in Iceland’s best interests.
Speaking with RÚV, the renowned corruption-fighter said that she does not believe that foreigners would exploit Iceland’s resources. On the contrary; she believes joining the EU would give Iceland even greater fishing territory than it has already. Joly spoke in part to the Icelandic people as a whole, saying:
“You are a part of Europe and have already adopted all of the EU’s rules and regulations, without being able to have any influence on them. You must know that within the EU there is a policy to bring in small countries such as yourselves so that you can have an influence on policy.”
Joly is herself an MP in the EU parliament, with the Green Party. As such, she emphasized that the notion that the EU has designs on Iceland’s natural resources is false. She contends that Iceland can and should negotiate for the protection of, for example, their fishing waters.
