Eruption News Roundup

As ash begins to fall, the Environment Agency of Iceland has issued a number of tips for people to have in mind. They advise that people avoid areas where ash is falling if at all possible. If they must go into the area, they should don protective eyewear and use wet cloths or similar respiratory apparatus. Children, the elderly, and those with lung conditions should stay indoors, keeping windows and doors closed. They also included this pretty stunning map of how Danish experts predict volcanic debris will blow over Europe, keeping in mind that there are varying degrees of particle density involved here – a thick blanket of ash is not likely to cover the entire continent:

In light of this, flights all across northern Europe have been cancelled. Police in the southern town of Hvolsvellur report that the road to Markarfljóti will in all likelihood not be open until tomorrow. The road between Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur, however, is now open again. If you want to see one amazing and super hi-res image of this flooding, go here and click on the image. If you’ve never seen what fine volcanic ash looks like, Vísir has some pretty good photos that you can check out here. In keeping with Iceland’s current record of being best at Only In The News For Bad Reasons, the eruption is number one in Google Trends’ Hot Topics.
