From Iceland — Do-Over For Presidential Elections?

Do-Over For Presidential Elections?

Published July 19, 2012

If the Supreme Court agrees with the legal complaints filed by two disabled people about election procedures, it is possible that presidential elections will have to be held again.
Presidential elections were held June 30. Although by most accounts things went smoothly, not everyone was pleased with the way elections were conducted.
RÚV reports that two disabled people have filed legal complaints with the Supreme Court of Iceland. The contention revolves around the decision to allow assistants to help the disabled in the actual voting booth, which some disabled were unhappy about. In Iceland, all ballots are supposed to be conducted in secret.
Ragnar Aðalsteinsson, the lawyer for The Organization of Disabled in Iceland, told reporters that he believes that if the Supreme Court supports the rights of the disabled to participate in free and secret voting, they should have no choice but to declare the elections invalid and hold new ones.
The Supreme Court has until July 27 to make a ruling on the charges.
