From Iceland — Democratic Alliance Chairman Working Toward New Constitution

Democratic Alliance Chairman Working Toward New Constitution

Published February 12, 2013

The recently elected Chairman of the Social Democratic Alliance party, Árni Páll Árnason, has confirmed that it is his intention to wrap up discussions concerning the new constitution before the end of the current parliamentary session. This despite the intentions of the opposition parties to shelf the new constitution, he said and RÚV reported.
The Council of Europe’s Venice Commission has submitted its comments on the new constitution to Alþingi today and it is the intention of parliament to process them immediately for further review by the constitutional monitoring committee.
Árni Páll stressed the importance of respecting the wishes of the people for creating a new constitution, as had been voted upon in the constitutional referendum that took place this past October. There are just 15 more working days for parliamentarians ahead of the elections this April.
