Cost of Painting over Graffiti 3 million ISK Per Month

Published February 6, 2013

The monthly cost of painting over graffiti in Reykjavík has been revealed to be 3 million króna, RÚV reports. This has resulted in a 33 million króna annual bill for the city over the past three years.
Some areas, such as the pedestrian underpass beneath Miklabraut, are re-painted twice weekly – at a cost of 15L of paint per effort – to keep on top of the constant re-appearance of graffiti and tags. Despite the extensive efforts underway in areas like the Miklabraut tunnel, RÚV does note that the total surface area claimed by various types of graffiti has decreased over the past four years. It was estimated that some 42,000 square meters of buildings in the city had been marked by graffiti in 2008, while just 23,000 square meters of graffiti was mapped in 2012.
