Constitutional Committee Meets To Discuss Venice Commission

Published February 19, 2013

The Constitutional Committee met yesterday afternoon to discuss the comments on the constitutional draft provided by the Venice Commission, the arm of the Council of Europe responsible for constitutional oversight. While the committee members did engage in discussion about the various points the Commission’s report had put forward for consideration, no solid conclusions or amendments to the constitutional draft were made, RÚV reports.
Valgerður Bjarnadóttir, chairman of the Constitutional Committee confirmed that changes will be made to the constitutional bill to reflect the suggestions of the Venice Commission, but various parties are still discussing how to implement amendments.
The current ruling coalition the Social Democratic Alliance and Left-Green Movement has said previously that they are determined to pass the constitutional bill before parliamentary elections in April.
