Conservative MP Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson told reporters that he intends to explain where the 24.8 million ISK he received during the 2007 campaign season came from.
According to official records, no one politician received a higher amount of campaign donations than Guðlaugur. Speaking on the news discussion show Kastljósið, Guðlaugur explained that many of the donations he received were from anonymous sources. He said it was his intention to go back, try and discover who the anonymous donors were, get them to agree to have their identities revealed, and then make the information public. He emphasized that he has done nothing wrong, and broke no laws.
Campaign finance reform is more and more prominent in the public discussion. Social Democrat MP Steinunn Valdís Óskarsdóttir – as well as Guðlaugur – have seen protests in front of their private homes in light of recently brought to light records of hefty campaign donations.
Currently, political parties police their own campaign finance rules. Some parties have established very strict guidelines for how much can be accepted and from whom. Others have no such boundaries.
