From Iceland — City Asked To Reverse Fee Raise On Elderly

City Asked To Reverse Fee Raise On Elderly

Published January 24, 2012

Elderly residents of the capital have asked city hall to withdraw a measure that raises fees on elderly people for city services.
The original proposal raises the costs of several municipal services for the elderly, pointing out that pensions have risen while the costs of these services have as well.
However, Vísir reports, the Society for the Elderly of Reykjavík and Surrounding Area objected to the measure, submitting a resolution of their own to city hall. They counter that while the costs of rides, hot meals, classes and other community services have risen, and pensions have as well, what little raise there has been placed on pensions is consumed by the rising fees. They have asked the city to withdraw the resolution.
The city previously landed in hot water of rising fees when they passed a resolution requiring the disabled to pay for their meals at two city community centres. In the wake of criticism, the meal fee was withdrawn.
