Christmas Terrorist Attempt Causes Delays at Iceland’s Airport

Published December 30, 2009

The Christmas Day bombing attempt on a flight bound for America has resulted in heightened security measures the world over, and Iceland is no exception.
As most are aware, a man traveling on a plane from Amsterdam to the United States on Christmas Day ignited an incendiary device in his pants, resulting in severe burns and him being overpowered by passengers before the plane was landed safely and the suspect was escorted away by police.
Many airports have heightened security measures for flights bound for the US, including Keflavík International Airport. On the behest of American authorities, travelers flying to the US are asked to arrive three hours before their scheduled flight as extra security measures are being taken. Passengers are also asked to bring as little carry-on luggage as possible.
Airport officials told RÚV that they believe the extra measures will be temporary, and ask passengers to be patient as they abide the official request.
