Candlelight Vigil Calling for End to Violence Against Women

Published November 24, 2009

In accordance with the UN International Day to End Violence Against Women (UNiTE), a candlelight vigil will be held tomorrow, 19:00, at the Culture House.
In a press statement from the organizers, the candlelight vigil will start at the Culture house at 19:00, and then continue as a march to the Peace Tower. Among the guests taking part are Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, Minister of Finance Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, Conservative vice-chairman Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, chief of police Stefán Eiríksson, and author and previous Grapevine columnist Þórdís Elva Þorvaldsdóttir Bachmann. Yoko Ono will also send a special message to attendees. All are welcome.
The release points out that since Stígamót, the Icelandic Counselling and Information Centre for Survivors of Sexual Violence, opened in 1990, they have received about 5,800 visitors seeking their services. “Peace does not really exist until violence against women in all its forms has been uprooted,” the statement adds in part.
