Blue Lagoon To Begin Charging Viewers In Addition To Bathers, Requiring Pre-Booking

A couple of changes are coming to the Blue Lagoon this summer. Those wishing to take a peek at the Blue Lagoon will, as of June 1st, be charged 10 euro to do so, RÚV reports.
Nearly 600 thousand people visited the Blue Lagoon in 2012, of which  more than 15% stopped by the site just to see the famous pool, not to bathe. In order to preserve the site the Blue Lagoon will charge looky-loos for the privilege of setting their sites on the milky blue waters. 10% of the new fee will support the development of tourism on the Reykjanes peninsula.
Also in the works is mandatory advanced booking to visit the site. To prevent overcrowding and lines, the Blue Lagoon will ask visitors to pre-book their visit to the lagoon. “There is a certain number who can book at any time of the day based on how many the dressing rooms and showers can accommodate,” said Magnea Guðmundsdóttir, a PR representative for the Blue Lagoon. “By doing this we can better cater to visitor. People cal come and enjoy the nature around the area and then visit the Blue Lagoon at the time they decided upon.”
