From Iceland — Blood Bank Needs Donors

Blood Bank Needs Donors

Published December 21, 2012

The Blood Bank is reporting a shortage, and badly needs donors in time for New Year’s Eve.
Anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 Icelanders regularly donate blood, RÚV reports, and while this is appreciated by the Blood Bank, they are still experiencing a shortage.
Sveinn Guðmundsson, the head doctor at the Blood Bank, said they are in need of 70 to 100 individual donors to donate when they open again on December 27. The hope is to meet their goal before New Year’s Eve, a time when donated blood is unfortunately needed more.
“The national hospital is like a city that never sleeps,” Sveinn told reporters. “At the national hospital over Christmas there are patients who are recovering from major surgery, accidents, those who are in cancer treatment, and these people need donated blood.”
The Blood Bank is located on Snorrabraut 60, and will be open on December 27 between 8:00 and 19:00. As this is the only day they will be open before New Year’s, they strongly encourage all those who can donate blood to do so.
