From Iceland — Björgvin Sigurðsson Resigns as MP

Björgvin Sigurðsson Resigns as MP

Published April 15, 2010

Social Democrat MP Björgvin G. Sigurðsson resigned this afternoon as a member of parliament, as economic crash investigations continue.
In a statement he sent to the media, Sigurðsson says that while the parliamentary committee continues to investigate the roles that former ministers – including himself – played in bankrupting the country, their work should be conducted carefully and nothing should cast doubts on the credibility of their findings. Therefore, he believes it best to resign while they try to reach a conclusion.
Sigurðsson was Minister of Business during the approximately year and a half leading up to the banking collapse. He resigned shortly thereafter.
The Special Investigative Commission (SIC) report released earlier this week depicted Sigurðsson as being out of touch with the worsening economic situation within the banks. It also stated that former Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde and former Central Bank chairman Davíð Oddsson purposefully excluded him from meetings, and that former Minister of Foreign Affairs Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir had also urged then Minister of Industry Össur Skarphéðinsson to keep Sigurðsson in the dark about the growing crisis within the banks. In light of the report’s findings, Sigurðsson resigned as party manager.
To date, no one else has admitted to wrong-doing or responsibility for the economic crisis.
