Incumbent president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson is the favoured winner according to the popular betting site betsson.com, while in related news, most people polled in a new survey believe strongly in term limits for the Icelandic president.
According to Betsson, the current odds being offered for betting on Ólafur to win are 1.18 to 1. Þóra Arnórsdóttir follows close behind, with odds of 3.6 to 1. Trailing far behind in third is Ari Trausti Guðmundsson, with odds of 17 to 1, while both Herdís Þorgeirsdottir and Andrea Jóhanna Óafsdóttir have 55 to 1 odds.
The longest long shot – or, depending on how you look at it, the largest potential winning for a lucky gambler – is Hannes Bjarnason, with odds currently set at 100 to 1.
In related news, Vísir reports that most of the respondents to a poll conducted by Stöð 2 and Fréttablaðið believe there should be a limit to the number of terms the Icelandic president can serve.
About 60% believe in limits of some kind, with the largest percentage – 27% – believing three terms should be the limit. 19% support two terms and 4% support a single term, while 8% believe four terms should be the limit and 1% think five terms is enough.
However, 39% do not believe there should be any limits at all. In fact, 57% of those who support Ólafur do not support any term limits. Interestingly, 18% of his supporters believe the president should serve no more than three terms – even though, if he is elected, this will mark his fifth term in office.
