Louis-Philippe Loncke of Belgium has set off to walk the 370 km trail across the interior of Iceland, reports mbl.is.
He left from Rifstangi in North Iceland last Tuesday and had reached the waterfall Dettifoss by the weekend, he reported on his blog. The trail ends at Kötlutangi in the South of Iceland, near the town of Vík. He plans to walk the trail in 19 days, covering at least 30 km per day, and intends to be the first person to complete it without additional help or supplies.
British hiker Christopher Mike was the first person to complete the trail without additional help in 2008, but kept supplies stored in Nýjadal although he did not use them. Louis-Philippe plans to complete the trail quicker than Christopher, and has not stored supplies in Nýjadal.
Louis-Philippe has undertaken several long-haul solo hikes in the past, including walking the Simpson Desert in Australia alone. He is walking across Iceland in preparation to ski across it this winter.
