Published July 3, 2013

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon began his official visit to Iceland yesterday, calling the country “a symbol for clean air, beauty, peace, and gender equality.”
In discussion with reporters following a meeting with Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Ban stressed the importance of stewardship, and passing along the earth to future generations in as good condition as possible, RÚV reports.
“We have to take care of mother earth so that the next generations can live better lives in a more sustainable way, with respect to the environment,” he said.
Later yesterday afternoon Ban learned about Iceland’s use of geothermal energy and gave a lecture at the University of Iceland on sustainability.
Today Ban will meet with Prime Minister Sigmundur Davið Gunnlaugsson and visit the Blue Lagoon before departing for Denmark.
