Artists Set Sights on Iceland for Ambitious Project

A global art project will also have an Icelandic portion, with the aims of painting a giant red polar bear on a glacier, and photographing it from a helicopter.
The project, called EARTH, is, according a statement from artist Charlotte Ólöf Jónsdóttir Biering, “to coincide with the opening weekend of the UN Climate Meetings in Cancun, Mexico, to draw attention to climate change issues.” Speaking with the Grapevine, she said that among the climate change issues most directly affecting Iceland was the rapid melting of the glaciers, which ties in with their choice of location.
Specifically, the plan is for her and fellow artist Bjargey Ólafsdóttir to draw a 80x50m polar bear on the glacier Langjökull with organic red food dye. The image will then be photographed from a helicopter. They expect to head up to the glacier with a film crew this Friday.
