About One Third Support Government

Published February 3, 2012

While individual party support has changed little, voter dissatisfaction remains significantly high.
According to the latest Gallup poll which asked respondents who they would vote for if elections were held today, RÚV reports, about a third said they support the current ruling coalition of Social Democrats and Leftist-Greens.
The Independence Party remains the strongest in the country, at 36%, down 2% from last month’s poll. The Social Democrats went from 21% to 22% between polls, but received 30% in the last elections. Their partners, the Leftist-Greens, came in at 14%, unchanged from last month and far below what they received during the previous elections.
The Progressives seem to be treading water, too, up 1% to 15%, or about what they received during the previous elections. About 3% said they would vote for the Movement, slightly less than they received during the last elections.
Voter dissatisfaction remains high, however. One in ten said they planned on voting for another party aside from these five. About 16% refused to answer the question, while 15% said they intended to either submit a blank ballot or not vote at all. A surprising result, considering the previous month was rife with new candidacies being announced, although perhaps these undecided or dissatisfied votes will show a change of course next month.
