Pirate Party MP, Birgitta Jónsdóttir, has expressed concern over the police’s request for proactive investigative powers, reports Vísir.

Independence Party MP, Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, raised the request in parliament yesterday and asked that fellow MP’s look to the recent terror attacks in Europe to consider the validity of a possible attack in Iceland and the need for extraordinary police powers.

“So there are supposedly anarchists, islamists, extremist right and left wingers who are potential threats to the country?” said Birgitta in response to Guðlaugur. “The Police are once again trying to instil societal fear.”

Birgitta went on to express concern over the wide range of qualifications the police feel justify proactive investigative powers, including being an anarchist, which incidentally she is.

As reported, Icelandic police want the authority to gather information on individuals they deem a threat to public safety.

The qualifications that the police believe pose a threat to public safety span a very wide range and include things such as “plays a lot of violent games on the internet,” and “works out and uses steroids.”
